Oregon Anti-Crime Alliance Joins The Fight Against Modern-Day Slavery
The Oregon Anti-Crime Alliance (OAA) has stepped up to fund an important Oregon awareness campaign against human trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery.
On Monday, April 19, 2010, OAA Executive Director Tara Lawrence joined other volunteers at the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to help prepare a mailing that will distribute a sticker featuring the National Human Trafficking Hotline.
The mailing also includes a letter that educates (OLCC) licensees about the issue. The letter encourages licensees to post the sticker in a prominent location in their place of business.
Earlier this year, OAA joined a coalition of non-profits and legislators to pass HB 3623 (2010), a law that permits a nonprofit organization to provide the Oregon Liquor Control Commission with National Human Trafficking Hotline stickers and other information about human trafficking. The law requires that these stickers be provided at no cost to the state. OAA stepped up to fund the printing of the National Human Trafficking Hotline stickers when other funding became unavailable.
“Each call to the hotline represents a precious life we can help rescue from the unbelievable agony of forced prostitution or involuntary labor. OAA is privileged support this first step in ending modern-day human slavery in Oregon,” said Lawrence.
Based on the success of a similar program in Texas, OAA believes that the stickers will result in dozens of new phone calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The hotline connects victims and persons who suspect trafficking to services and other help for victims. “Victims are often young girls in their early teens that are forced by pimps to work as prostitutes against their will. It is a heartbreaking situation. Anything OAA can to do help end the tragedy for even one young lady is well worth the effort.”
Join the effort against modern slavery today! When you make a donation of $10, $25, or $50, you will help OAA pay for these National Trafficking Hotline awareness stickers and material. Your gift may save a life, so donate now.
